'The mission may be over but support for our troops must never wane' is the rally cry of the 2012 Heroes Highway Ride & Rally. From rather humble beginnings in 2009, the Heroes Highway Ride & Rally has grown to become Canada's largest premier Support Our Troops event.
Our organization: The Heroes Highway Ride & Rally Association is a Not for Profit Ontario Corporation (Ontario Corporation #1827867) that oversees the organizing of the event, while sharing the management of the HHR with our hosts - the membership of the Perfect Pigs Motorcycle Club. In a radical departure from the traditional pay, register and then ride formula; we introduced the relatively new concept of a FREE registration event. But raising funds was always the major consideration and to this end, the HHR has raised approximately $50,000.00 by collecting voluntary donations on behalf of our chosen charity, Wounded Warriors (Canada Revenue Agency Charity Registration # 82808-2727-RR0001) as well as various military supporting charities including the Trenton and Toronto Military Resource Centre's and the Portraits of Honour. Transparency, the cornerstone of our philosophy, is practiced by allowing the HHR participants to witness the ceremonial transfer of 100% of the donations collected during the course of the HHR, directly to Captain Wayne Johnston, Founder of Wounded Warriors. Also note that our staff consists entirely of volunteers and that our budgetary expenses do not include any payroll or personal expenses.
Our 2012 event: On Saturday June 2nd we will hold our Fourth Annual Heroes Highway Ride & Rally. In recognition of the ongoing efforts of our Ride and Rally, the Canadian Forces have allowed us to marshal our ride at CFB Trenton in the City of Quinte West. A gesture designed to buoy morale following a recent tragic event that tarnished the outstanding history of the base. During the pre-ride, C.F.B. personnel will oversee interactive displays and examples of current military equipment, including a field kitchen which will be serving breakfast to participants for a $5.00 donation. The Mayor of Quinte West and CFB Trenton's base commander will then distribute the donations in support of two local charities. The motorcycle ride departs at 11:30 sharp, under Police escort, and follows the Highway of Heroes to connect with the Route of Heroes and on to the Toronto waterfront - ending at our rally location of the Sound Academy located at Polson Pier. The rally is open the public and features participation from Toronto Armouries, Moss Park and Fort York. Attendance projections for 2012 are estimated at 3000 plus motorcycles - equating to approximately 4000 plus riders with an additional 5000 plus attendees expected at the rally. The HHR is a rain or shine event which has experienced serious rain in the past but that hardship failed to dampen the spirits of our participants, it only endeared them to the members of the Canadian Forces.
Our objectives: To host an event that allows Canadians the opportunity to demonstrate their pride and patriotism as well as their support of our troops; to create an atmosphere that entwines the members of the Canadian Forces and our participants in mutual understanding and support for our military; to recognize and honour the significant contributions and sacrifices of all the members of our Canadian Forces, and their families, and to bring attention to Operational Stress Injuries (OSI) also known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorders. As motorcyclists, we are simpatico with the men and women of the Canadian Forces because our chosen lifestyle somewhat parallels the lifestyle of the people who serve, therefore we are using the HHR to forward the message that 'Bravery isn't only needed on the battlefield but also when seeking help to heal the scars on the soul,' and to diligently ensure that our message of support for the troops resonates around the globe by exploring new media relationships, as well as expanding our current ones.
